Drinking water is important

For some years now, the topic of drinking has literally been on everyone's lips. It is generally said that 2-3 liters of water a day is the optimal amount for an adult to drink. However, the scientific opinion on this is not entirely clear. There are also studies that show that a smaller amount than 2 liters a day is sufficient. At the Mayo Clinic in the U.S.A., research was carried out into how the individual need for water is calculated. Both weight and age play an important role.

To calculate your drinking needs

Multiply your weight by your age. Divide the result by 28.3 and multiply this result again by 0.03. However, the drinking quantity calculated in this way is not universally valid. For example, on days when we sweat more, we naturally need more fluid.... If we do sports or exercise, we lose fluid through sweating, which should also be replaced by water. Accordingly, the amount of drinking should be increased accordingly. The same applies to warmer days. Pregnant women or nursing mothers should also discuss the optimal amount to drink with their doctor.

What happens when we drink too much

Anyone who drinks significantly more than one liter per hour runs the risk of damaging their kidneys. Physical complaints such as headaches, nausea or dizziness due to the falling sodium concentration in the blood can also be the result of drinking too much. As is always the case with water, the dose makes the poison.
