Moisture in walls, moldy walls and moisture damage in the basement.

It is often thought that making exterior walls airtight encourages mold growth because it would prevent the walls from breathing to move moisture out. However, the so-called breathing wall is a myth.

Because actually a transport of the humidity from the rooms out is important, however this does not happen by the walls, but by other, leaky places.

Mildew on the wall: a "fuzz" has already formed here.

Moisture transport old building, air exchange new building and moisture exchange new building

Especially in old buildings, it can be seen that this moisture transport occurs through leaky windows. Walls, on the other hand, contribute only minimally, if at all, to moisture circulation. While walls are often capable of absorbing moisture from the room and later releasing it, thus regulating the indoor climate, they do not release the moisture to the outside.

In newer buildings, where modern windows with high-quality window seals are used, the exchange of air and moisture is severely limited. For this reason, it is important to install manual ventilation as well. Otherwise, the rapid growth of mold due to moisture may well occur

The paper wallpaper - walls creative design

In the hardware store, pattern wallpaper is also available in various designs.

There are virtually no limits to creativity when it comes to creative wall design in your own four walls. Here, on the one hand, it is about the decorative nature of the wallpaper, as well as on the other hand, the materials of such a wall covering. Over the years, the industry has come up with a lot in this regard. From synthetic fibers to cellulose, from non-woven to tear-resistant materials: just about anything is possible today.

Every requirement can be satisfied thanks to a comprehensive product range. The classic variant is the "good old" paper wallpaper. With a price per square meter of about eighty cents, it is one of the cheapest types of wallpaper. It consists mostly of printed recycled paper and it "scores" above all also by the fact that the adhesive needs only a short soaking time. However, it is only conditionally tear-resistant.

Plain wallpaper, unit wallpaper and woodchip wallpaper

Single-color wallpaper can be beautifully enhanced with a border.

In contrast, the so-called unit wallpaper is usually somewhat thicker, it is single-colored and strikes with a purchase price of about 1.50 euros per square meter. The unit wallpaper can also have plastic surfaces.

However, woodchip wallpaper is particularly popular. It is considered extraordinarily tear-resistant and is valued for its high resistance. This is made possible by the wood chips interspersed between two layers of paper during the manufacturing process. Despite its high stability, it is breathable, moisture-regulating, and it impresses with excellent workability. Disadvantage: it is very difficult to remove from the wall later.

Vinyl wallpaper, photo on non-woven wallpaper and photo wallpaper

Of course, the classic vinyl wallpaper must not remain unmentioned here. With an average price per square meter of about five euros, it is indeed a bit more expensive. However, it is washable and usually even abrasion resistant. It is a material made of polyvinyl chloride, which is very suitable for kitchens, bathroom areas and hallways due to its extraordinary stability.

Those who like it really creative and colorful, still like to rely on the photo wallpaper. Here, several paper webs are joined exactly (!), so that in the final result a beautiful photo motif on the wall. Whether made of paper or non-woven: this makes every room a real eye-catcher. And that for a price of about 2.60 euros per square meter.

Embossed wallpaper and structure vinyl wallpaper

Here you see a structure wallpaper which was pasted with a brodure.

Similar to woodchip wallpaper, embossed wallpaper consists of two (or three) layers of paper glued together. Here, too, the focus is on breathability, high stability and an attractive relief structure.

In contrast, textured vinyl wallpaper is a wall covering that scores with a unique, three-dimensional effect. This is made possible by the foamed plastic surface, which, incidentally, is even wash-resistant, stable and non-slip.

Textile wallpaper, EMC wallpaper and fiberglass wallpaper

Textile wallpaper also provides a stylish room ambience. Here, textile fabrics are applied to paper using special bonding techniques and later colored as required or designed colorfully using the screen printing process. The square meter price of approximately 10 euro frightens the one or other busy do-it-yourselfer off occasionally. However, it is primarily the appearance and the high-quality, qualitative nature that is convincing.

If you literally want to "play it safe" in your home and "shield" yourself from the environment - for whatever reason - you should opt for an EMC wallpaper. Not only that it is permeable to water vapor and can also be wallpapered over. It impresses in particular also by the fact that it protects from radiations as well as from electrical smog. With a price per square meter of about 14 to 15 euros, it is relatively expensive, but the financial effort is indeed worth it. Unfortunately, it is difficult to remove later.

In comparison, conventional fiberglass wallpaper is relatively inexpensive. It costs about 2.60/m² and is suitable for almost any room. It consists of fine glass threads, which together form a high-quality wall covering. The "icing on the cake" is the robust finish, which provides even more stability.

Removing woodchip wallpaper

Woodchip wallpaper contains small wood chips, so it is not so easy to remove from the wall.

However, there is one thing on which everyone agrees: tearing off the old wallpaper is truly a tiresome matter.... But here too, if you plan well and do some preliminary work, you will quickly "see the light at the end of the tunnel".

If, for example, the old woodchip wallpaper, which is known to be particularly difficult to remove, is soaked with a water-soap solution and then waited a few minutes, the rest is easy. And also the actual wallpapering process then goes quickly and skillfully "over the stage".

Proper wallpapering - wallpapering made easy

Once the old wallpaper is removed, it is necessary to eliminate any wall and settlement cracks. These are best simply "modeled away" with plaster. Then it is advisable to check the absorbency of the wall. To do this, the wall surface is first wetted with a few splashes of water.

The faster the drops penetrate the surface, the more absorbent the wall is. This means that a special primer must be applied to prevent the wallpaper paste from being absorbed too quickly later. This would namely massively impair the durability of the wallpaper.

Tips paste wallpaper

The paste should be spread generously on the wallpaper with a tassel.

Depending on the nature of the wallpaper - whether fiberglass, vinyl, non-woven or paper wallpaper - the paste should also be adapted. Many varieties are equipped with a special adhesive strength booster, so that you will enjoy your new wallpaper for a long time. Because paper wallpapers are usually comparatively thin, it is recommended to let them soak for a few minutes after pasting. This allows the adhesive to penetrate deeper into the material and guarantees improved durability.

Beginners very often make the mistake of applying too little paste. So if possible, do not skimp when pasting.

If the wallpaper was fixed too quickly on the wall, ugly bubbles may appear. These can be fixed by making a small cut with a cutter knife, which removes the air under the wallpaper. Following this, the area is only "touched up" with a little wallpaper paste.

Wallpapering and painting walls

When painting exterior facades, it is important to make sure that the paint protects the walls as effectively as possible against moisture penetration. In the meantime, (dispersion) paint is even available on the market that has very good, water-repellent properties and also quickly removes even penetrated moisture to the outside.

In connection with painting or wallpapering interiors, however, it can happen - especially in the course of renovating older houses - that it is precisely the moisture-repellent property that can lead to mold growth. This is because the moisture, resulting from possible droplet formation, can only escape with difficulty. However, if the design is carried out with conventional wallpaper in damp rooms (bathrooms and toilets), possible mold problems are often to be expected here as well. It is similar with the choice of wallpaper. Above all, it should be breathable and made of sturdy, tear-resistant material.

Tip: Depending on the intended use and size of the premises, a (covering) primer should not be missing. Otherwise, among other things, color changes or deviations could occur.

Structural damage: Cracks in walls & ceilings

Hairline cracks are not exactly a visual highlight in buildings, but they are mostly of a harmless nature. Nevertheless, it is advisable to "keep an eye on them" and have any cracks that become larger checked by professionals. It is not advisable to plaster the affected areas "on your own". If cracks appear in the corner areas of (interior) walls, this may be due to the fact that perpendicular walls have not been optimally interlocked. However, so-called flat irons can be very helpful in this regard.

Of course, frost can also promote the formation of cracks. This is because frozen water that has penetrated the wall expands quickly and thus helps to press the masonry apart. Thus, it is advisable to restructure the cracks or dry them in time. For hairline cracks, by the way, one coat of paint is usually enough to cover the affected areas. Larger cracks should of course also be covered professionally, for example with a crack filler or a special sealing compound.

Tip: Have cracks checked by a specialist (structural engineer) beforehand.

Repairing damage to walls, plaster and wallpaper

In contrast to long, wide cracks, small hairline cracks on the wall are usually harmless. In the case of conspicuous cracks, a structural engineer should be consulted immediately. In the case of hairline cracks, on the other hand, it is sufficient to paint over the affected areas or to paste over them with a suitable piece of wallpaper. If the wall plaster is sanding or even crumbling away, the loose areas must first be completely removed and can only then be reapplied. Damage can also occur during wallpapering itself.

Often, however, these can be easily concealed by minor cosmetic repairs: Web edges that have come loose can be reattached in no time with a little paste and a few brushstrokes. Bubbles underneath the wallpaper are also relatively easy to remove. With the help of a wire brush or a knife, small holes are pressed in so that the paste underneath can flow out. In the meantime, there are even products on the market that can adapt perfectly to the structure of woodchip wallpaper, so that any scratches and holes that may be present are almost no longer visible.

Energy saving through thermal insulation

The simplest form of thermal insulation consists of wall cladding. In the meantime, they are available as solid construction, but also as kits, which are just put together, similar to Lego bricks. A kit can be installed by one or two people within a few hours. However, one should consider whether to choose wall cladding for exterior or interior use.

Depending on the intended use, the wall cladding consists of different materials and must accordingly be processed differently, or maintained differently continuously. Furthermore, there are differences in the readiness to absorb rainwater and moisture.

There are sometimes considerable differences in the processing of the wall cladding. This is explained in more detail in the instructions for use. If there are no instructions, you should go to the hardware store for advice on the various methods and, if necessary, contact a construction company for advice.

No matter whether one decides now in the interior for wallpapers, plasters, wall color, natural stones or other exclusive building materials, one should always obtain sufficient comparison information to the Jeweiligen wall covering. The more fancy you want the wall covering to be, the more detailed research you should do before choosing your desired wall covering.

Retrofit thermal insulation Insulate exterior wall and facade

If you want to live energy-efficiently, you should pay attention to good insulation of the facade already during construction. Although the facade can be insulated at a later date, it is never as efficient as when the house is being built. There are various options when it comes to insulation. While the roof is usually insulated with aluminum foil or building foam, the facade must of course be insulated using other materials. For houses with flat roofs, by the way, you can also use styrofoam for insulation. Styrofoam has similar insulating properties as, for example, construction foam. However, especially when it comes to protection against moisture, the foam has an advantage. However, it also starts to mold more quickly. In contrast to Styrofoam, building foam retains moisture. There are a number of things to bear in mind when processing the exterior facade. If you want to apply for subsidies, you should ask a specialist about the EnEV. Furthermore, it is important to find out about the right building materials, as not every material is equally suitable. By the way, the most important thing for the construction itself is that the substrate is properly prepared. Among other things, it must be dry and clean.

Wallpaper ceiling, ceiling renovation, ceiling lining and ceiling tiles.

Of course, there are not only floor coverings, but also ceiling coverings. While in most of them the ceiling is covered only by wallpaper, especially in owner-occupied houses can be found ceilings made of wood.

By the way, a new form of ceiling covering is also called liquid wallpaper and is made of cotton. Alternatively, the ceiling covering is also known as textile fiber plaster, but colloquially it is simply called liquid wallpaper. Since the material is made of 100% cotton, it not only has excellent thermal insulation properties, but also regulates the humidity in a room.

Special care should be taken when replacing an existing ceiling covering. In addition, you should plan a lot of time, because there is no ready "click & ready system". By the way, if you just want to additionally insulate the apartment, you can use insulating ceiling tiles instead of a ceiling covering. These are relatively easy to process and are available in numerous colors.
