Vitamin D Requirement Calculator

The vitamin D requirement calculator is a tool that helps you identify how much vitamin D you need to supplement in order to maintain optimal health. The calculator takes into account your weight, age, and gender, as well as the time of day you take your supplements.

No sufficient coverage of the vitamin D requirement in the winter months

Most people nowadays eat such a balanced diet that an additional supply of dietary supplements is not necessary. However, an exception often applies to vitamin D. Strictly speaking, this is not a vitamin, but a hormone that regulates the calcium balance and is responsible for bone formation and breakdown.

The body covers its vitamin D requirements primarily through exposure to sunlight: if we spend time in UV light, our vitamin D reserves are filled. An adult human needs about 30 nanograms (ng) per mililiter of blood of vitamin D per day. To be able to form this amount, a 15- to 30-minute stay outdoors, preferably dressed in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt, is already sufficient. In winter, however, it is somewhat more difficult to absorb sufficient vitamin D, especially in our latitudes. The vitamin D contained in food (for example, in fish, eggs, milk/dairy products and mushrooms) is not sufficient as the only source of vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency becomes noticeable only after years

People who do not regularly visit the solarium and rarely spend time outdoors could develop a deficiency. People who spend a lot of time indoors are particularly at risk. A deficiency only becomes noticeable in the long term: As a result, rickets can develop in children and osteoporosis in adults. With advancing age, the need for vitamin D increases, so that an additional supply then becomes all the more important.

To find out whether you suffer from a vitamin D deficiency, you should ask your doctor for a blood test. Even though this test often has to be paid for by yourself - unless it is ordered by a doctor - it is worth having the vitamin D concentration in your blood determined. You can then calculate for yourself whether an additional supply of vitamin D through a suitable preparation is necessary and how many micrograms you should consume daily.
